FAQ Frequently Asked Questions (Culture Initiative)

The Utrust Culture Initiative is an expansion of the Utrust Appreciation Program, encouraging a culture of mutual appreciation among students, parents and school staff. It fosters gratitude in all directions: parents and staff appreciating students, students appreciating one another, and staff members appreciating both colleagues and students. The broader educational community is invited to show appreciation for school staff and students.

The Culture Initiative promotes ongoing appreciation throughout the school year through engaging activities led by the G-Force, including monthly Culture Quests, the Birthdate Challenge, and other culture-building activities.

Only schools that participate in the Utrust Appreciation Program are eligible for Culture Grants. Alternative schools are not eligible for Culture Grants.

Monthly Quests are collaborative activities created to bring students and staff together in building a more positive and inclusive school culture. These quests feature creative and engaging experiences that encourage participation not only from the entire school, but also from parents and the wider community. Led by the G-Force team, each quest is designed to inspire ongoing acts of kindness, gratitude, and meaningful connection throughout the month.

To participate in the Culture Initiative, schools must meet the following requirements:

Have a G-Force.  Form a student leadership team, the G-Force, to lead the initiative and designate a G-Force Adviser to guide and support their efforts.

Participate in the Birthdate Challenge. Students and staff participate in the Birthdate Challenge, fostering a culture of gratitude through monthly acts of appreciation..

Engage in Utrust-Provided Monthly Quests. Students and staff participate in the Utrust Monthly Culture Quests to promote appreciation and positive relationships within the school community.

Encourage Parental Participation.  Inform parents about the Culture Initiative and encourage them to participate.  Send them information about why and how they can show appreciation to their children. Invite them to enthusiastically support monthly culture quests by not only encouraging their children to participate but by participating themselves when possible.

Invite Community Participation. Inform the community about the Culture Initiative and share ways that the community can support and participate in the program.  Share sample documents provided by Utrust with selected community organizations and invite their support.

Schools that participate in the Utrust Appreciation Program may apply for a culture grant at Utrust.org.

Culture grant funds are based on the student population. Principals are informed annually about the amount their school qualifies for.

The funds provided through Utrust’s Culture Grant must be used to support activities that foster a culture of appreciation within your school community. Priority must be given to purchasing materials needed to carry out monthly culture quests and to award prizes for winners of culture quest competitions. Other  permissible uses include rewarding the efforts of student leaders, refreshments or small tokens of appreciation to honor staff members, or culture building activities determined by the G-Force.

G-Force
The G-Force leads the execution of the monthly Culture Quests and the Birthdate Challenge, playing a vital role in fostering a culture of gratitude and appreciation among students and staff. As student leaders, they help bring energy and creativity to each initiative, encouraging participation and connection throughout the school.

G-Force Adviser
The G-Force Adviser schedules monthly meetings with the G-Force team and ensures they have the necessary supplies for their projects. This role also includes providing primary guidance and support to the team, helping them plan and carry out their responsibilities effectively while developing leadership and collaboration skills.

Principal
The Principal offers active support and encouragement to ensure the Culture Initiative is embraced throughout the school community. By promoting participation and recognizing the contributions of the G-Force and others involved, the Principal helps set a positive tone and reinforces the importance of gratitude and appreciation in the school culture.

School Coordinator
The School Coordinator works closely with the G-Force Adviser to align each month’s activities with the broader goals of the school’s Appreciation Program. This role includes helping to coordinate logistics and ensuring that the resources needed for Culture Initiative events are in place and ready to go.

Together, the G-Force, A-Team, Advisers, Principal, and School Coordinator form a collaborative team dedicated to creating a school environment where gratitude and appreciation thrive. Through their combined efforts, they help shape a culture that uplifts, includes, and inspires.

The Birthdate Challenge is an essential component of the Culture Initiative, designed to promote regular expressions of appreciation within the school community. Each month, students and staff members participate by expressing appreciation to at least one staff member and one student on the date of their birth—not just on their actual birthday. For example, someone with a birthday on May 17 would show appreciation on the 17th of every month throughout the school year. By embedding appreciation into the rhythm of school life, the Birthdate Challenge helps strengthen relationships and fosters a more positive, connected school environment.

The Culture Initiative is built on four foundational pillars, each essential to creating a thriving culture of appreciation and positivity within the school and broader community.

Student Involvement
Students lead the charge in fostering appreciation and kindness through activities like the Birthdate Challenge and Monthly Culture Quests. By taking an active role, they develop important leadership and teamwork skills while learning the value of recognizing and uplifting others. Their enthusiasm and creativity help set the tone for a positive school culture.

Staff Involvement
Faculty and staff play a key role by modeling appreciation and supporting students in their efforts. Their involvement in the Birthdate Challenge, Monthly Culture Quests, and everyday acts of kindness reinforces a consistent message of gratitude throughout the school. When staff members actively participate, they demonstrate the importance of empathy, encouragement, and community building.

Parent Involvement
Parents are encouraged to model appreciation at home and support their children’s participation in the Culture Initiative. Their reinforcement of these values outside the school setting helps create a more unified and consistent message of kindness, appreciation, and respect across all areas of a student’s life.

Community Involvement
Local businesses and community organizations are invited to take part by offering resources, recognition, and encouragement for schoolwide efforts. Their participation not only strengthens the bond between school and community, but also helps create a shared culture of appreciation that extends beyond the classroom, reinforcing the idea that everyone has a role to play in building a kinder world.
